Growing up in south Modesto, Derek Rey ran lemonade stands, washed cars and mowed lawns. He liked being his own boss, even as a kid.

“I always thought of myself as an entrepreneur,” Rey said.

The 28-year-old’s latest business venture, as co-founder and president of Adly Inc., has him working 80 hours per week to promote advertising opportunities via Twitter messages.

“I split my time between New York and Beverly Hills, where our office is, but I try to visit home about once a month,” said Rey, whose parents now live in Turlock. “I’m very proud to be from the valley, and the lessons I learned growing up in the Modesto area help me tremendously in everyday decision making.”

Rey’s high-tech life is different from his days at Ceres High School (Class of ‘99) or California State University, Stanislaus (bachelor’s degree in business marketing, 2004).

What his business does is difficult for many to grasp: Adly Inc. runs Ad.ly, which is monetizing Twitter by arranging for businesses to pay people to post tweets that promote their products.

Twitter is a free social networking site that enables people to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are limited to 140 characters, and they are sent to friends, fans and other “followers” through cell phones and computers.

Some Twitter “publishers” have millions of followers, such as reality TV star and socialite Kim Kardashian, whose 10 or so daily tweets are read by 2.7 million people.

Rey’s company has a deal with Kardashian enabling businesses to pay her $10,000 per tweet to promote their products.

“A small handful of advertising campaigns are with Kim,” Rey said. Many of his other clients (who cost less) are more popular with advertisers, he said.

Lauren Conrad, from MTV’s “The Hills,” gets paid “several thousand dollars … maybe once a week” by Ad.ly for promotional tweets, Rey said.

Other Hollywood celebrities Rey has hooked up with advertisers include George Lopez, David Spade, Brooke Burke and Joe McHale. Rey said influential business and technology people who tweet, such as technology journalist Leo Laporte, are becoming popular with advertisers.

Ad.ly launched in September, backed by a little less than $1 million in funding from GRP Partners. That venture capitalist partnership previously backed Starbucks, Costco and Jamba Juice.

“We think this is a tremendous market, and there’s demand for what we’re doing,” said Rey, who runs the sales and media end of the business. “We’re growing really fast. We have over 50 advertisers, including Sony Pictures, Microsoft, NBC, Universal Pictures, Ralph Lauren and Nestlé.”

Rey said about 19,000 Twitter publishers have registered to accept Ad.ly advertising, “and we’ve probably placed ads on 15 to 20 percent of them.”

Most of those sponsored tweets, of course, earned their publishers far less than what big-name celebrities command.

“We strive to make the ads high quality … and we limit each publisher to one sponsored tweet per day,” Rey explained.

He is pleased that after just five months in business, Ad.ly has strong revenue and is “very close” to turning a profit.

That’s more than Rey could say about some of the other businesses he founded.

“I started about five companies that failed,” Rey admitted. “But in business, you only have to be right once to succeed.”

Like most entrepreneurs, Rey is an optimist and not shy about self-promotion.

Before he graduated from CSU, Stanislaus, Rey entered a Bee competition that was a miniversion of Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice.” Modesto entrepreneur and multimillionaire Dan Costa took on Trump’s role, and Rey and two others competed to be his apprentice.

Twitter, fuelled by smartphones and online bursts of 140 characters, soared to lofty heights over the past year while Facebook eclipsed MySpace to become the world’s leading social network.

“Those are the big winners,” said Jason Keath, a North Carolina-based social media consultant and founder of SocialFresh.com, an organiser of social media conferences. “Facebook more or less tripled their size this year.”

“Twitter grew immensely,” added Keath. “I think they were somewhere around maybe two to four million users at the beginning of the year. Now they’re near 40-million.”

With 350-million members, “if Facebook was a country it would be the fourth most populous nation,” said Scott Stanzel, a former deputy press secretary to president George Bush who has also worked for software giant Microsoft.

“Going back one year ago I don’t think people would have thought Twitter would have had the influence it’s had,” added Stanzel, who now runs Stanzel Communications, a Seattle-based public relations consulting firm that offers social media planning among its services.

“It was gaining popularity but it has really exploded this year and it’s done so in a way that’s become incredibly pervasive,” he said.

Twitter has reportedly spurned takeover offers worth hundreds of millions of dollars from Google and Facebook, and its influence as a communications and news-breaking tool has been validated in a number of ways over the past year.

In June, the State Department asked Twitter to delay scheduled maintenance on the service because it was being used by protestors angered by the results of Iran’s disputed presidential election.

More recently, Google and Microsoft began integrating Twitter messages into their respective search engines, a new feature described as real-time search.

Rampant adoption of smartphones has much to do with Twitter’s growth, according to Jack Levin, co-founder and chief executive of ImageShack, an online media hosting company which runs yfrog.com, a service for sharing images and video on Twitter.

“The explosion of smartphones in the United States and many other countries has led to the success and ease of communication between people and Twitter is certainly in the middle of that,” Levin said.

“People obviously want to communicate and Twitter is really a communications platform,” he said of the service which allows users to pepper one another with messages of 140 characters or less and provide links to the web.

“It’s a hybrid between instant messenger and email,” Levin said.

Levin’s yfrog.com is one of the thousands of applications created for Twitter by outside software developers credited with fueling the popularity of the microblogging service.

Facebook, which started the trend of opening up to outside creators of fun mini-programs, was also quick to realise the appeal of being able to connect from anywhere at any time.

“The thing they’ve done and MySpace didn’t do is they’ve really expanded the scope of their network past the initial site,” Keath said. “Facebook Connect is a big piece of that, where you can take your Facebook account and log in from other places.”

Facebook and Twitter are popular because essentially they “provide real value to people in their personal and work lives”, according to Stanzel.

“You can keep up with hundreds if not thousands just by having a Facebook account or by being active on Twitter,” he said.

Stanzel also credited social media tools with “redefining the way in which companies or politicians relate to their consumers or constituents.”

“Companies or politicians who have taken to Facebook or Twitter or YouTube are building more of a permanent relationship with their constituents or with their customers because they’re engaged in a conversation,” he said.

Keath predicted Twitter’s growth is “going to slow”, saying it is inconceivable the San Francisco-based firm could match this year’s meteoric surge in user numbers.

Twitter needs to be wary of spammers “putting out garbage, bad information, trying to direct message everyone in the entire service, porn links and things like that”, Keath added. “That would cause people to restrict their networks a little more.”

Stanzel warned that if Twitter “starts becoming overrun with advertising or becomes too complicated they might see their growth slow down or even reverse”.

Keath suspects Twitter, which has yet to unveil a plan for making money, will seek over the next year to become “more of a marketing tool”.

“I think there will be a lot of emphasis on providing more value to businesses and commerce in general,” he said.

As for Facebook, Keath said it “looks highly likely that they’re going to launch a payment portal, a payment tool”.

“There’s debate over whether there would be high adoption of giving Facebook your credit card information,” he said. “But if they do that they’re not only going to have your social network but your commerce too.

“And then they’ve pretty much locked in most of your activity online.” – AFP

Many businesses will spend enormous amounts of money on image advertising and advertising to the WRONG audience. If you are going to spend money on advertising, it is important to realize that you are paying for the SPACE the advertising takes… so, why not make it profitable? Why not present yourself to the RIGHT audience with the RIGHT message?

Many businesses will spend enormous amounts of money on image advertising and advertising to the WRONG audience. If you are going to spend money on advertising, it is important to realize that you are paying for the SPACE the advertising takes… so, why not make it profitable? Why not present yourself to the RIGHT audience with the RIGHT message?

The ultimate strategy is to have a consistent stream of qualified prospects calling you. So how can you achieve this? Well, here is a method which has worked very well for me in direct mail and on the internet, and you may like to test it for yourself.

It is called LEAD GENERATION ADVERTISING. Now this kind of advertising only asks for names, addresses and phone numbers of interest prospects. As you can imagine, if that is all it is asking for, the cost of advertising will be a lot cheaper than large display advertising which normally tries to tell the whole story.

The best thing about lead generation advertising is its ability to attract only those people, who are interested in what you are offering. The other advantage is the low cost of small classified newspaper adverts. If you are using the internet you would use a slightly different strategy using pay per click ads.

I will quickly talk about pay per click ads. All you do is run simple ads offering a free report in return for the person supplying his or her name and email address. You can then deliver the free report and follow-up newsletters by email. I have successfully used this technique to build databases of thousands of prospects. It works.

The important thing to remember is that the only purpose of the ad is to get them to leave their details. Get the prospect to take just one small step at a time and do not expect a prospect to do more than they are comfortable doing. You also need to respect their privacy and only send them good information. You can ask them to take a second step and buy your product after you have gained some credibility with the prospect.

I once advertised for a self-storage company I ran little classified ads in the local newspaper. The ads simply asked people to phone and listen to a pre-recorded message in return for them getting a free report filled with useful tips on safely storing their possessions.

The ad itself did not attempt to make the sale! Its purpose was to get a LEAD! Do not risk wasting your money by trying to do anything else in your ad except raise the curiosity of the target audience.

This is VITAL! Never ask any step in the process to achieve more than it is supposed to.

The ads were designed to get a lead. The outgoing message on the automatic telephone response system would ask the prospective client to leave his or her name, address and possibly a phone number. It was really that simple.

Here is what the pre-recorded telephone message for the storage company sounded like.

Thank you for calling, this message goes for the next 90 seconds.

My name is [NAME]; I am owner of XYZ Storage in ABC street. I would like to give you some valuable storage tips for FREE!

No-one likes to have their furniture or possessions burgled, soaked by water, burnt by fire or eaten by rats. It can happen, especially if it’s just stored in a garage somewhere. That’s the ugly truth, but it doesn’t need to be like that.

It doesn’t matter whether you are storing something for just a couple of months or several years – some important precautions can reduce or virtually eliminate any risk. It’s all revealed in the FREE guide.

Condensation build-up on hot days and leaks on rainy days can cause considerable damage to furniture, appliances and books. Mice living in, and feeding on, clothing can do some horrendous damage. It happened to me a few years ago and believe me it’s not a pretty sight.

Then there is the growing problem of burglaries and vandalism. That’s why I decided that every unit at XYZ Storage would have a burglar and smoke alarm monitored 24 hours a day. That’s why I’ve insisted on precautions like video cameras, regular guard patrols and security lighting. You can’t be too careful.

From experience I can honestly say you’ll only get one chance to do it right.

For your FREE 16 page quick and easy guide to “worry-free” storage, CLEARLY leave your name, address and phone number and I will send it to you immediately. Please speak clearly and spell any difficult names.

Thank you for calling.

Now if your message is getting more than 50% hang-ups, you need to scratch that message and try a new one, If you are getting 70% or more happy to leave their details, do not change a word. A 70% response is great!

You can also ask for the phone number of the enquirer. Some sales firms claim that asking for phone numbers decreases the number of names collected, however I have not found that to be the case. Occasionally you will get a call from someone who wants to have their name removed from your database. Just thank them for notifying you and tell them their details will be removed that day.

In summary; the first step is to ask for their contact details in return for a free report, the second step is to ask for the sale AFTER you gained credibility with the prospect.

I had a problem. It was a big one – I wanted to make money online but I never did anything about it. I call this procrastination, but you can really call it anything you want. The results are the same – there are no results.

The sad thing about this procrastination is that it was hard for me to identify that I was actually doing it. Excuses and rationalizations would always pop up. I had a fantasy in my head that I was going to start my own online business, even though it was clear that I wasn’t taking enough action.

Eventually I couldn’t hide from the truth anymore, and I accepted the fact that I wasn’t doing enough. Reading instructional books was helpful, but it wasn’t enough – I had to start following through.

Here are the things that helped me:

1. Hold yourself accountable

This is important, it means you can’t just sit back and do nothing, you have to call yourself out and say ‘I’m not doing enough’. One tip to do holding yourself accountable is getting a partner. With a partner, you both have to take action, and you both are accountable to each other. This will help keep you focused.

2. Make smaller goals

Goals are great, we need them to take action. But sometimes we make our goals so big that we are intimidated by them. With making money online, small goals is the key. For example, a goal like ‘I will purchase my first domain name this week’ is often more powerful than ‘I will make $10, 000 per month online’. Your goals will grow as you progress.

3. Do something small each day

Whether it is reading a chapter in a ‘how to’ book, buying a domain name, or doing a blog post, you should try to do something each day. This is action. These small actions will bring big results overtime.

So, these are some things you can incorporate into your life right now to ensure that you are making progress. Procrastination is a deadly problem, and you should not underestimate its power. I’ve been there myself, and I want to make sure that you don’t ignore it.

Be truthful with yourself and make sure you are taking action. Success online doesn’t happen over night, it starts with consistent action – the sooner you start, the quicker it will come.

There’s a rather vocal minority in the Internet Marketing community who are of the opinion that there are no secrets in this business, and that you can learn There’s a rather vocal minority in the Internet Marketing community who are of the opinion that there are no secrets in this business, and that you can learn everything you need to know to build a successful online business for free. They say that there’s no need to buy any of the courses the ‘Gurus’ are selling; all you have to do is surf around and learn how to do it yourself.

A great example of this are the people who say Site Build It is too expensive, that you only need 3 dollar hosting and a free blog to make money online.

The huge problem with this view is that while it certainly is possible to eventually work out how to build a successful business on your own, it takes time. And to discover what actually works through a process of trial and error, it can take a whole LOT of time.

Now if you really think about it, why would you want to spend time (which is the only commodity you can’t buy more of) trying to work everything out yourself, when for a few bucks you can BUY somebody’s proven System after they’ve ironed out all the bugs?

The other big problem that the ‘Do it all yourself for free’ camp don’t want to mention is that if you talk with successful people in all walks of life, nearly all of them have chosen a role model, coach or Mentor who helped them to succeed. Virtually none of them tried to ‘Do it all themselves for free!’

So the REAL keys to making money in Internet Marketing is these:

1 – Find a System that has been proven to work

2 – Find a Mentor to help you to implement that system

Sometimes you can be fortunate enough to find a mentor who will help you for free. However, be careful of free advice, it’s normally worth what you pay for it (and it’s often worth a lot less that that). The majority of the time, you’ll have to pay your Mentor or Coach to share his or her experience. That’s understandable really – do you go to your job or business for free without expectation of payment? Probably not…

The simple fact is that you shouldn’t really expect free coaching from anybody who has succeeded at what you want to do, so you should be ready to pay for their time and experience. Paying for a proven System that has results for others, and then investing in coaching from somebody who can shortcut your learning curve dramatically is a wise investment.

Once you move past the ‘Do it yourself’ lack mindset and start to follow a System that is proven to work, a whole World of opportunities will present itself. When you have found some success, paying for more Systems and coaching to take you to the next level will seem like an absolute bargain.

So my advice would be to forget about trying to do everything yourself, and choose a System you’d like to become an expert in. It doesn’t really matter what you get up to – Google or Yahoo Pay Per Click advertising, Article Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, , Product Creation, Affiliate Marketing or anything else. Then choose ONE Mentor to help you master that System, and focus on perfecting it for yourself under their watchful eye until you succeed.

The superb tools and hosting package that GVO offers is not the only thing to get excited about; the compensation plan is an opportunity seeker’s dream.

2 x 10 Matrix
All Titanium members ($44.95 per month) are put in their own 2 x 10 forced matrix. What this means is: two people you refer are put on your 1st level; the next four referrals are placed on your 2nd level; eight are placed on your 3rd level, etc., all the way down to 10 levels (a total 2046 of people). A full matrix will yield $4,500 per month (not counting the bonuses). Keep in mind that you won’t be building your matrix alone as your referrals will be bringing in people, and those in your upline will be contributing to your matrix as well (known as spillover). You will make 50% (Quick Start Bonus) commision  from every referral you sponsor into GVO for their 1st month. From that point forward you will continue to receive 20% (Matching Bonus) on all your referral’s commissions. In addition, you will receive 5% from everyone in your downline whether you personally referred them or not.

2 x 10 Matrix2When the number of people in your downline reaches 14, you will be able to begin a new starting point (banked position) in your matrix under anyone in your downline. What this does is allows you to extend your matrix further down as well as enables you to either help struggling members, reward hard-working members, or entice a heavy-hitter to join your matrix by placing one of your banked positions under them. You receive additional banked positions (used at your discretion) for every 14 new additional members in your matrix.

Finally, there is a Bonus Pool where the top 20
referrers share in 10% of the net company profits.

Having a large contact list is only part of the equation. It’s equally important to have an autoresponder to handle your growing list of prospects. For those who may not know, an autoresponder is an email software utility: When someone subscribes to your website by giving their name and email address, the autoresponder will send them an email to confirm their subscription. From this point on you will be able to schedule your autoresponder to send pre-determined informational and promotional emails to your subscribers for as long as they choose to remain on your list.

There’s certainly no shortage of autoresponder services to choose from. Price and features makes choosing an autoresponder a simpler matter.

AWeber Pricing

AWeber is a very popular autoresponding service. As you can see, the pricing progressively goes up with the number of subcribers in your list. Take note of the $50 pricing for 5,001 to 10,000 subscribers.

GetResponse Pricing

At the time of this post, GetResponse, another popular service is charging
$58.50 for 5,001 to 10,000 subscribers.

The pricing for both AWeber and GetResponse more than double when you exceed 10,000 subscribers. GVO offers an autoresponder that will handle an unlimited amount of subscribers for $44.95. If that wasn’t enough, look at this complete collection of must-have internet marketing tools and services you get with your GVO autoresponder:

* Personalized Autoresponder System
* Online Virtual Conferencing

All businesses need leads or prospects to market to. The question is where to obtain or find the best leads for your internet marketing or MLM business. Buying leads is a popular method but they can quite often be disappointingly non-targeted. On the other hand, generating your own leads online, is a proven method to get desirable targeted prospects necessary for a thriving business.

How do we go about generating our own leads online? It is essential to have your own website that can be tailor-made to brand yourself. Video is by far the best way to brand yourself and for your prospects to get to “Know, Like, and Trust” you. People are more interested in problems that you can help them solve over anything else, and video is the absolute best way for you to begin a relationship with your customers or prospects. A much larger percentage of people visiting a website that has video will be willing to give their name and email address compared to a website that has text alone.

Joel Therien, President of GVO discusses Easy Video Producer and its role in creating an endless supply of prospects.
